Download the Netscape browser for free. Lots of movie and VR downloads here. Download Quicktime 3 for free.

The icons above will take you to the downloads you need.

This site relys on Javascript to make the pages responsive to the viewer rather than mere electronic versions of printing. (The clock in the Pas d'avant les domestiques section was made with Javascript.)
The Netscape browser has built into it the universal form of Javascript, which is what these pages use. It also lets you see things that other browsers (and some services, like AOL} ignore. You can download Netscape for FREE! for both Windows and Macintosh at the link above. (Unlike Netscape, Internet Explorer uses a modified Javascript that is only compatible 100% with Microsoft products.)

Sorry about the blinky. It will never happen again.

Quicktime is the international standard for digital movies. You can get it free for either Windows or Macintosh. It handles just about any other type of digital movie (including AVI, MPEG, video, and VR panoramas) as well as many sound files, such as Midi. In addition, it offers a slew of effects that the viewer can apply to images right on the web.

If you're browsing using AOL you'll miss a lot of the interactive animations on these pages. Also, you may be getting really tired of the download times, since AOL first downloads from the net to its servers and then again downloads to you. Here are some free direct internet service providers that offer a full-range of services including eMail and home pages:

FreeI.net
NetZero
DotNow
AltaVista

FreeI.Net has a lot of features and both Mac and Windows set-ups. NetZero has a wholesome statement of purpose and policies. All of these come with a movable ad banner; at AltaVista you have to click on it every hour to remain connected. And you can still switch to a $4.95 AOL account if you want to have a backup. [Full Disclosure: AOL's stock has kept at least one artist from starving since ´91, but, hey, free is free.]

The other day, another person browsing in the web book section said she hated Macintoshes. I didn't point out that the book in her hand, 70% of the sites on the web, PC User magazine, and the circuit boards for the Intel chip are all created on Macs. (Did I mention that the Star Wars special effects are created on Macintoshes?) Starting at about $1500, you can get one of the new G3's that are faster than an Intel Pentium III in a Silicon Graphics box, even with more MHz. Really? You don't have to buy one, but why hate them? If a certain gazillionaire made hardware, he'd buy the whole company (and you'd never see them again, heh, heh, heh).

Finally, you will see references to a site called Old Town at the bottom of most artSavant pages. Old Town is a 3D-rendered town you can explore easily, with lots of worthwhile links in its different buildings. My partner in creating Old Town will kill me if he finds this page you're reading, because Old Town is a friendly place and we leave personal rants at the town limits. Please don't blame the town for my opinions; I just did the art (he's the nice one). But I've got to tell you one more thing: if we had put up a "download Explorer" banner we'd receive some tempting free software each month. We don't because we both like to think that the Web has a rare spirit of freedom that such offers might subvert. You can surf that idea without a browser.

Click on everything.

P.S. Since I didn't want to use the usual "download me now" pictures,
I made the new ones above. You can use them, too, as long as no charge
or change is made. ©1998 artSavant
