Washington, D.C.--As both private and government organizations spend more resources to train their employees to use the internet, Graphic Imaging Corporation (GIC) has designed a web site called Old Town Crossroads that offers both new and experienced users a solution to navigating the chaos of the net.
The site can be accessed at http://www.gic.net/xroad.html on the web. A "graphical Yahoo" with a difference, Old Town Crossroads is an imaginary world laid out as a 3-dimensional, interactive town. Additionally, the site itself caters to every net user and is no way geographically limited by any specific town. It is the morphing of the best aspects of many real places.
Old Town Crossroads attempts to provide a stable and well-known place for users to stop (or start) their Internet adventure. With almost everything else on-line designed to be futuristic and cyber, this site aims to evoke familiarity and comfort while catering to more than just the computer professionals.
"We continually update our site content with current links while, at the same time, keeping up with the latest technology," says David Goldstein, President of Graphic Imaging Corporation. "Ours is an on-line community that strives to be easy to use and functional."
As new links and content are continually being added, Old Town Crossroads will be different on each visit. This provides users with a good reason to make repeat trips. The site was designed for entertainment value with stops such as the cinema (with links to movie and TV sites), but other popular stops are the university (with a career center and job bank), a metro stop with travel resources and a town hall with links to political and government sites. Users can also register as citizens of Old Town, which might enable them to feel more connected or "at home" in cyberspace.
In just a few months of existence, the Old Town Crossroads site was recognized in the industry. The site was recently featured in NetGuide (3/12/96), NetSurfer Digest (4/3/96) and .net Magazine (5/7/96). Additionally, the site was honored with numberous awards including Infoservice's Top 5% in the World (5/20/96), Blue Planet's Cool Site of the Day (5/3/96), What's New BobaWorld (4/29/96), The Spider's Pick of the Day (4/13/96), Honorable Mention as WLYN Radio's Link of the Week (2/26/96), Earth Link's What's Hot (2/21/96), Click.Net's Site of the Week (2/21/96), and Tour D'Nets' D'Best(2/18/96).
Old Town Crossroads is a joint venture between systems consultant David Goldstein and graphic artist Tom Epps. The two teamed up in 1994 to work on the project. The site can be accessed at
